In rerum natura non possunt dari duæ substantiæ ejusdem attributi (per propositionem præcedentem) hoc est (per propositionem 2) quæ aliquid inter se commune habent. Adeoque (per propositionem 3) una alterius causa esse nequit sive ab alia non potest produci. Q.E.D.
Daar konnen (volgens de voorgaande Voorstelling) geen twee zelfstandigheden van een zelfde toeëeigening gestelt worden: dat is, (volgens de tweede Voorstelling) die met malkander iets gemeen hebben: en dieshalven kan (volgens de darde Voorstelling in dit deel) d' een niet d' oorzaak van d' andere wezen, noch d' een van d' andere voortgebracht worden; 't welk men betogen moest.
It is impossible that there should be in the universe two substances with an identical attribute, i.e. which have anything common to them both (Prop. ii.), and, therefore (Prop. iii.), one cannot be the cause of the other, neither can one be produced by the other. Q.E.D.

Want in de natuur word niets gestelt, dan zelfstandigheden, en hun aandoeningen; gelijk uit d'eerste Kundigheit, en uit de darde en vijfde Bepaling blijkt. En een zelfstandigheit kan van geen zelfstandigheit voortgebracht worden; volgens de voorgaande Voorstelling. Dieshalven, een zelfstandigheit kan volstrektelijk niet van iets anders voortgebracht worden; gelijk te betogen stond.
Hence it follows that a substance cannot be produced by anything external to itself. For in the universe nothing is granted, save substances and their modifications (as appears from Ax. i. and Deff. iii. and v.). Now (by the last Prop.) substance cannot be produced by another substance, therefore it cannot be produced by anything external to itself. Q.E.D.
Demonstratur hoc etiam facilius ex absurdo contradictorio. Nam si substantia ab alio posset produci, ejus cognitio a cognitione suæ causæ deberet pendere (per axioma 4) adeoque (per definitionem 3) non esset substantia.

Want indien een zelfstandigheit van iets anders voortgebracht kon worden, zo moest (volgens de vierde Kundigheit) haar kennis van de kennis van haar oorzaak afhangen, en zou dieshalven (volgens de darde Bepaling) geen zelfstandigheit wezen.
This is shown still more readily by the absurdity of the contradictory. For, if substance be produced by an external cause, the knowledge of it would depend on the knowledge of its cause (Ax. iv.), and (by Def. iii.) it would itself not be substance.
