De darde slach van kennis spruit uit een evenmatig denkbeelt van enigen van Gods toeëigeningen, en gaat voort tot een evenmatige kennis van de wezentheit der dingen; bezie de Bepaling hier af in het tweede Byvoegsel van de veertigste Voorstelling in het tweede deel: en hoe wy op deze wijze de zaken meer verstaan, hoe wy (volgens de voorgaande Voorstelling) God ook meer verstaan: dieshalven, (volgens d' achtëntwintigste Voorstelling van 't vierde deel) d'opperste deucht van de ziel, dat is, (volgens d'achtste Bepaling in 't vierde deel) het vermogen der ziel, of de natuur, of (volgens de zevende Voorstelling van 't darde deel) d'opperste poging is, de dingen door de darde slach van kennis te verstaan; 't welk te betogenstond.
The third kind of knowledge proceeds from an adequate idea of certain attributes of God to an adequate knowledge of the essence of things (see its definition II. xl. note. ii.); and, in proportion as we understand things more in this way, we better understand God (by the last Prop.); therefore (IV. xxviii.) the highest virtue of the mind, that is (IV. Def. viii.) the power, or nature, or (III. vii.) highest endeavour of the mind, is to understand things by the third kind of knowledge. Q.E.D.
