Affectus qui passio est, desinit esse passio simulatque ejus claram et distinctam formamus ideam.

De hartstocht, die een lijding is, is een verward denkbeelt; volgens d'algemene Bepaling der hartstochten. Indien wy dan een klaar en onderscheide denkbeelt van de hartstocht zelf vormen, zo zal dit denkbeelt niet, dan door de reden, van de hartstocht zelf, voor zo veel het tot de ziel alleen toegepast word, onderscheiden worden; volgens de tweeëntwintigste Voorstelling van het tweede deel: en dieshalven (volgens de darde Voorstelling van 't darde deel) houd de hartstocht op een lijding te wezen; gelijk te betogen stond.
An emotion, which is a passion, is a confused idea (by the general Def. of the Emotions). If, therefore, we form a clear and distinct idea of a given emotion, that idea will only be distinguished from the emotion, in so far as it is referred to the mind only, by reason (II. xxi., and note); therefore (III. iii.), the emotion will cease to be a passion. Q.E.D.
